“We’re working in sync with the United States of America” - Francois-Philippe (Innovation, Science and Industry Minister)

Last week, US announced they are imposing 100% tariffs on Chinese EV imports. So Canada is considering doing the same.

The details:

  • US imposed heavy tariffs on Chinese EVs to keep them out of the US market.

  • Canada is following up on that and doing the same to completely shut them out of the North America market.

  • Canadian government is also heavy pushing on the development of EVs. Recently announcing the construction of new $1.6B EV plant in Port Colborne, ON in partnership with Asahi Kasei Corp.

The full picture: As the EV market grows, US and Canada are trying to protect their auto industry and making it difficult for outside players to enter the North American market. The objective of these tariffs is to protect the domestic production of EVs by stopping the (cheaper $$) Chinese products from entering the market. China is pushing back, claiming these tariffs are violating the international trade rules.

Why is this a big deal?
Crypto industry and SEC has been in a love and hate relationship with continuous lawsuits and legal battles. Two year ago, SEC was successful in passing a rule that would allow financial firms to hold cryptocurrencies.

However, last week the crypto industry celebrated a big win by overturning this rule. But the jobs not done yet, because this bill will be facing its final test on the desk of US President.
